Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

Ditch the Ick! My favorite ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season.

If you’re like me, you have kids who come home with the latest icki-ness. Then I spend my time trying to combat the gross-ness and trying to make sure that my entire family stays well. But sometime it’s impossible. You’re going to catch the grossness that’s making its way through the school, or office. That being said, there are ways to bolster your immune system so that you aren’t sick for very long or avoid getting sick altogether.

Here are some of my favorite natural remedies to combat the ickiness that’s ground around.

Garlic and Honey to the rescue!

Take clear jar and fill with peeled garlic cloves. Cover them with honey and keep in the fridge. Initially they may float to the top. That’s ok, turn the jar upside down once daily to make sure the coves are covered. Eat an entire clove if you’re feeling sick. If you’re my son,  you will not eat the clove to save your life. In that case, a tbsp of the honey will suffice. When the honey level goes below the garlic, replace with more money.

Ginger Honey Tea

This is an easy one! Start with fresh ginger, dice it finely and steep it just like you would your regular tea. Add some honey or some lemon and you have the perfect ginger tea.

Honey and Citrus Immunity Elixir

I can’t pay my kid to eat a clove of garlic – it’s just not going to happen. Just for him I make a special jar of honey and citrus. After a few days, the honey and citrus combine to form a cough syrup consistency. Depending on what your kids will eat, this might be a more preferable option for them.

Good Old Chicken Soup

There’s a reason that people eat chicken soup when they are sick. Mom’s original recipe is comforting, soothing and supportive of your immune system while you’re fighting off any grossness.

Check out my Soups That Feed The Soup e-book for all my soup recipes, including my creamy (without cream) chicken noodle soup.

I wanted to create the perfect tea for when you’re sick. You can sip this tea all day. With ingredients like ginger, marshmallow root, and echinacea, it’s the perfect tea for when you’re feeling under the weather.

These are some things that work for me and my family, but I’m not a doctor or a medical professional. I encourage you to do your research and find a good solution for you and your family.
