Sage has been used for hundreds of years to help with a sore throat. I even remember reading something about George Washington taking sage tea for a sore throat!
Sage is super easy to grow (my sage plants are a year to two old right now). I would not use the sage in the spice isle. Those grocery store spices are frequently filled with chemicals, heavy metals, and other junk. We just want to use the sage here, and nothing else.
If you’re lucky enough to have sage in your yard (or your neighbors) that’s a better option.
Let’s talk for a second about using herbs. Not all herbs are appropriate for all people. If you’re taking medication, I suggest asking your doctor about any contraindications.
For those of us who like to use herbs rather than over the counter medications, just know that sage might not be appropriate for kids, especially small kids. A sage gargle might be more appropriate. If you’re not too suer about a sage gargle, you can always have your kids gargle salt water instead.
Sore Throat Sage Tea

minutesThis tea is perfect for when you kid has a sore throat
Ingredients
6-12 sage leaves (depending on how big they are)
15 ounces of water
1 tsp honey
juice from 2 lemons
Directions
- Put all of the ingredients into a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer.
- When the liquid is cooled, strain and enjoy.
- If you have kids, they may want some more honey with their tea.
Sage isn’t appropriate for all people. Be careful using sage with children. Rather than having them drink the sage tea, a sage gargle might be more appropriate. My “kids” are bigger than me, so take my experience as education, not advice.
As always, talk with your health care practitioner before using herbs. Herbs aren’t right for everyone, especially for people who are taking medication.
