Remember how Mary Poppins sang “a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down”? This recipe is the physical representation of this song. I wanted to create something that had the power of healing herbs but also my kids would consume.
Enter… immunity honey
Honey is a great home remedy for a number of reasons. It never goes bad, it’s a cough suppressant in itself, it has antioxidant properties, etc… And it tastes good.
Last summer my family went on a lovely Hawaiian holiday… where we all got covid for the first time. The doctor at urgent care told me that the best cough suppressant was actually honey. So, we all took a tsp of honey several times a day. And it WORKED!
I wondered how else honey could help us when we’re sick. This recipe also combines powerful herbs such as garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper. Add some turmeric if you like, as well. The result? A herbal honey that you can put in your tea, or just some hot water to soothe a sore throat.
I love an herbal remedy. It means that I don’t have to spend $150 bucks to see the doctor. Instead I can support my immune system at home!
Immunity honey is another option for people who want to support their immune system while using natural remedies. For this recipe I used a 4 ounce jar. Since I’m making this immunity honey for when the family isn’t feeling well, I’ll just keep a small jar on hand in the fridge.
Ingredients
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
4 cloves garlic
2 inches pieces of ginger cut into pieces
3 cinnamon sticks
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a small jar.
- Cover the ingredients with honey.
- Leave in the fridge for several weeks.
- Use 1 tsp when you’re not felling well. Take it straight or add it to your tea.
