Homemade Low Sugar Ketcup

My family likes to make fun of my love to ketchup. I hear a lot of “your burger is bleeding” comments on nights that I make burgers. But, I just can’t help it. There’s something about ketchup that I love.

Here’s the problem with ketchup. Most conventional ketchup is PACKED with sugar. I recently read that in a conventional bottle of ketchup that for ever 1 tbsp there is 3 grams of sugar. Another way of thinking about it is that up to 1/2 of of that bottle is sugar!

Do we really need all that sugar?

Homemade ketchup

This is another recipe grew out of the fact that I did not want to go to the grocery store. Little did I know that making ketchup was SO DANG SIMPLE! In this recipe I use maple syrup instead of sugar. You can use honey or any other sweetener (like sugar). Every time I have this ketchup I have to remind myself that it’s less sweet and much tangier than the traditional stuff because there’s so much less sugar.

This recipe is so simple that I just don’t know that I will ever go back to purchasing ketchup again. Quite simply, you just put all of the ingredients in a lot, let it simmer and get happy. Let it cool while you’re making your French fries. And that’s it.

Most conventional sugar has tons of sugar in it. We're going to make our own at home. It is sweetened with maple syrup instead of sugar, but tastes just as delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 x (14-ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 2/3 cup maple syrup

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar

  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 2 tsp onion powder

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp sea salt

Directions

  • Place all the ingredients in a small to medium saucepan. Stir well to combine. Turn the heat on medium to medium-low until all the ingredients are combined.
  • Let simmer uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Make sure you stir frequently to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom on the pan.
  • Taste frequently to make sure it’s to your liking.
  • Once cool, put in a jar in your fridge.
