The other day my kid came home feeling sick. You know the drill. Scratchy throat, feeling clammy. The whole deal.
I knew what I had to do. I haven’t yet made fire cider this year, but I keep a stockpile of elderberries on hand. There are plenty of other home remedies that might work well, too.
Elderberry syrup is one of the remedies that I have found that my family likes. And a remedy won’t work if they won’t take it.

8 cups water
1/2 Cup fresh ginger, chopped
7 whole cloves
7 sticks cinnamon
1.5 to 2 cups raw honey
3 Oranges, juiced

- Take all of the ingredients and bring to a boil.
- Then turn down to a simmer until the liquid has been reduced by half.

- You will want to taste-test this to make sure that there is enough honey in the mixture.
- Keep in a glass container in your fridge for 1-2 months
Notes
Elderberry isn’t appropriate for all people. Be careful using with children. My “kids” are bigger than me, so take my experience as education, not advice.
Some people take elderberry every day as a preventative, but elderberry really isn’t meant to be taken that way. Elderberry should not be taken as a preventative, rather than you first start not feeling well.
As always, talk with your health care practitioner before using herbs. Herbs aren’t right for everyone, especially for people who are taking medication.
