Pie crust is one of those things that you can easily purchase at the grocery store, but did you know that it’s SUPER DUPER, DUPER easy to make at home.
I use a food processor to make my pie crusts, but you can also use a pastry cutter or even just your hands. I always think about my grandma. I mean, she didn’t have a food processor back in the day. She made everything from scratch… and guess what we can too. It will just take a minute.
If you plan to make your pie crusts from hand, I suggest getting a pastry cutter. It makes things easier.
To make the process go by fast, I start with the butter and cut it into small cubes. Then I put my bowl with the butter in the freeze until I’ve assembled all my dry ingredients.
Mix the flour and salt with a whisk to combine. Then add the butter. The idea is that small little clubs of butter will be present in the pie crust. This gives it the flaky texture. Once the butter had been added a mixed a bit, add some of the ice water about 1 tbsp at a time. This will provide moisture to the pie crust and combine all the ingredients together.
Once the dough has been formed, be careful not to over mix. Form into a disk, cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. You can also place it in the freezer to use another time.
Homemade Pie Crust
Recipe by Victoria1
pie crustPie crust is one of those items you can easily purchase at a store. If you’re the type of person who purchases pie crust, I will not shame you whatsoever. BUT, just in case you want to come over here to the dark side and start to make your crust from scratch, you will need a simple recipe.
We’re going to use our food processor for this recipe. Let it work for you, so you’re not kneading dough for what seems like an eternity.
Ingredients
1 1/4 Cup Einkorn Flour (or your favorite all-purpose flour)
1/2 tsp salt
6 Tbsp COLD butter
3-4 Tbsp Ice water
Directions
- Cut the butter into small chunks (tablespoons or smaller) and place in the freezer for 15 minutes or so. The butter needs to be super cold to create a flaky crust.
- Put the ingredients (except the ice water) in the food processor. Add the flour, salt, and butter to the food processor. Pulse a few times to combine.
- Slowly dribble the ice water into the food processor 1 tbsp at a time, until the dough slowly starts to form into chunks, and then a ball.
- Continue to pulse and add dribbles of water if needed. You do not need to add more ice water if the dough looks like it has started to form a ball.
- When the dough starts to form little chunks, do not add any more water. If you see small chunks form, continue pulsing.
- Continue to pulse until the dough looks like a giant dough ball.
- Remove from the food processor and form into a disk. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 40 minutes or so.
- Use with your favorite pie filling or form into hand pies. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
