DIY Italian Spice Blend

Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on jar of seasoning? It might surprise you to find all of the “non caking agents” and extra ingredients. Or my other favorite… added sugar.

I love buying organic spices but they’re crazy expensive. All of this has lead me to start making my own spice blends. I’m going to share with you my Italian blend. It’s so easy to make, it’s delicious and you know what exactly is in your spice blend.

I love growing herbs. Herbs are the easiest edible plants to grow. At least that has been my experience (ask all of the house plants that didn’t make it).  What I love about herbs is that nothing goes to waste. I give the plants some love and they give me herbs that I can eat. It’s a win, win.

For this recipe I used plants from my own garden that I dried myself. I simply trimmed off a little bit of plant material each week, dried it and stored it in jars in my pantry.

While I get a lot of joy from my garden, for new gardeners, rosemary and peppermint are both good selections. You can put them in a pot (for the love of all things holy, do not plant peppermint in the ground). When the soil gets dry, make sure to water it. And… don’t forget to talk to your plants. They love it.

If you're checking your labels and looking to decrease the amount of processed food in your life, you may want to consider making your own spices. It's really easy. If you get really into it, you can easily grow your own herbs too.
Makes 1 jar of Italian seasoning blend.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup oregano

  • 1/4 cup basil

  • 1/4 cup rosemary

  • 2 tbsp parsley

  • 1 tbsp sage

  • 1 tbsp thyme

  • 1/2 tbsp garlic (optional)

Directions

  • Add the herbs to a bowl. Using your hands, rub your hands together with some herbs in them. This will break up the herbs.
  • Mix well
  • Once the herbs are a smaller size, add your garlic.
